Event: Tax day protest

The Guilford County Libertarian Party and the UNCG College Libertarians will gather at the post office at 201 Murrow Blvd. in Greensboro on April 17 at 5:00 pm in protest of legalized theft, aka income tax and the IRS. We will display signs with pithy anti-tax messages while handing out anti-tax literature to the people as they drop their tax forms into the mailbox. We may even make the news, as we have in the past.

A sign-making party will be held at the home of David Loner on April 13 at 7:00 pm. For more details, e-mail Paul Elledge at paulelledge2@hotmail.com.

Come out to the post office on tax day and show the country that taxation isn't acceptable just because it's legal. Or as Ayn Rand put it, "There can be no such thing, in law or in morality, as actions forbidden to an individual but permitted to a mob."

Bill of Rights Day petition drive

The Bill of Rights is without a doubt one of the most important provisions of the US Constitution. The nation celebrates Bill of Rights Day on December 15.

While Bill of Rights Day isn't one of the more high profile holidays, it will be an ideal opportunity to organize a signature drive.

Download a copy of the Bill of Rights and a copy of the LPNC ballot access petition. Make plenty of copies of the Bill of Rights and several copies of the petition. Pick a day (or two) around the 15th, find a busy location, and offer passersby a copy of the Bill of Rights in celebration of Bill of Rights Day. Once you have their attention, ask if they will sign the petition.

Sometimes one of the hardest things about petitioning is approaching perfect strangers and asking them to sign. Breaking the ice with the "gift" of a copy of the Bill of Rights should make the task easier. Even if they don't sign, they are reintroduced to this important document.

Petition for LPNC on Ten Thousand Tuesday

Hello, fellow Libertarians!

This is a longish announcement, but please read it all the way through, as it contains a clear discussion of what we're facing this election day and what's at stake for the Libertarian Party in NC - and what you can do to help.

Election Day '06: what does it mean to Libertarians in NC? This year - it means an election to which we - as Libertarians - have not been invited. Sure, we can vote, but there will be no Libertarian line on the ballot - meaning no choice at all for about half the state legislature races, and no real choice in most of the other solidly gerrymandered districts.

In order for the Libertarian Party to help break this Republican/Democrat stranglehold in NC, we need to get back on the ballot. Some of you have been petitioning steadily - and for that, thanks! Others have contributed to the ballot access fund so that we can hire paid petitioners - people who take time off from 'real' jobs to help the Party, but who still need to eat. And for THAT, thanks!

But we're still only about halfway to our goal of getting back on the ballot. Once we do, recent changes to NC law and a strong gubernatorial candidate (one has already announced and is actively campaigning!) should allow us to retain our status as a 'recognized' political party through '08. But we need those next 50,000+ signatures - and election day presents a unique opportunity to get a good chunk of them.

On election day, we have a steady stream of registered voters heading to the polls. They are people who are engaged in the process and who care about their ballot - and they need to hear that Libertarians are working to give them more choices on their ballot. And WE need them to help us tell the state of North Carolina that the voters want a third choice on the ballot!

In short: The Libertarian Party of NC needs YOU to get out to the polls on Tuesday and get as many signatures as possible. That's why we're calling it Ten Thousand Tuesday, and I hope you'll be a part of it.

If just 100 of us can get to a local poll on Tuesday and get 100 signatures each, then we'll be at an easy 10K. And this is a perfectly reasonable goal - at a good polling place, we've had petitioners bring in 600, 700, 800 or more signatures from a day at the polls.

Can't work at the polls all day? Even an hour in the morning and a few in the evening can be a big help - during the after-work rush you should be able to knock out an easy 200 or so signatures. Getting signatures on election day is *easy* - especially after people come out of the poll after seeing how little choice they really have!! At one polling place in Wilmington, a LP activist couldn't be there all day, so he left a small table, a sign, and petition sheets. When he came back later that afternoon, he had *hundreds* of signatures!! Surely you can put something like this together at *your* polling place!?

NOTE: The Libertarian National Committee meets right after election day, and one of their agenda items is allocating the ballot access budget. Even if we wildly surpass the 10K goal we've set for election day, we still have a LOT of signatures to gather - and that will require the efforts of paid petitioners to happen in a reasonable timeframe. If the LNC sees that we're serious and committed to ballot access - that is, that we've put our own sweat into the job - they will be much more likely to back our further efforts with a good part of their ballot access budget. If, on the other hand, they think we're not serious enough to mobilize a big volunteer effort on election day and we've blown off a big opportunity, they may be less inclined to
invest in our continuing effort.

The fight for ballot access continues to be a drive for us. We've petitioned at least once a week for the past month! The petition drive is still the only sure fire way that the LPNC will appear on the ballot in 2008. So, I encourage any and every Libertarian in the state to devote some time to collecting signatures. We don't have the financial support of the national party this cycle, so our efforts must pick up the slack. First and foremost get Signatures!

Also, we are continuing our legal battle with the state of North Carolina over electoral law. This lawsuit has incredible potential. In the end it could change the face of public elections in NC. It's a lot easier to help the lawsuit. All you have to do is donate. No talking to strangers, no hours in the sun getting signatures, just some money.

The LPNC is developing a powerful slate of candidates for 2008. Help us thrust the Libertarian party into unprecedented popularity.

This Wednesday, June 7, we will be holding our monthly county meeting at the Green Bean in downtown Greensboro (341 S. Elm St.). We're meeting in the study room at 7:00 PM. We'll be discussing our continued petitioning efforts (which are going extremely well), our many upcoming outreach events, and a new mailing to send out to Guilford county Libertarians! We'll also be heading to Celebration station afterwards for $1 mini-golf and a bucketful of good times! Come Join us!

Hey Everybody! Our website now features a donation button! We are now officailly accepting donations in any form. Credit, debit or paypal...we take 'em all. All the procedes will go towards the efforts of the Guilford County Libertarian Party. We use our money (what little we have) to do mailings and obtain signatures for ballot access in and around Guilford County. The state party is also accepting donations. They are raising money for a lawsuit that challenges current election law, and to hire professional petitioners to help in the signature drive. The Batle for Ballot Access

For those of you who are new to the hurdles facing third parties in North Carolina, here is a brief update. Every four years, if a party does not get 10% of the presidential or gubernatorial vote, they are de-certified as a political party. In order to remain an "official" party, they must collect approximately 70,000 signatures (2% of the votes cast in the last gubernatorial race).

Today we continued the battle against hegemony by petitioning in downtown Greensboro. We collected a little over 100 signatures today. That may not seem like much, but 100 signatures once a week is 5200 signatures a year. If every Libertarian in the state spent one hour a week getting signatures, we’d be back on the ballot in no time!

Not only does petitioning get us closer to ballot access, it’s an important outreach opportunity. The more Libertarians there are petitioning, and the more often they petition, the more people hear and see us. Besides…it’s fun!

So stand up! Pick up a clipboard! Join us in our fight for Liberty!

Summer County Meetings

Now that School is over, only county meetings are going to be held on a regular basis. County meetings will take place on the first Wednesday of every month at 7:00 PM. Most of the meetings will be held at 110 Odell in Greensboro, but from time to time we will change the location. There will be announcements on this website for any location change throughout the summer. Our first county meeting of the summer is tonight (5/3) at 110 Odell at 7:00.

A break from business

Taking a much-needed break from politics, the UNCG College Libertarians and members of GCLP took to the bowling alley on Wednesday, April 26 in lieu of a business meeting. In a political organization, lightening things up every once in a while is critical.

On Monday April 17th the Libertarians of Guilford County will be protesting the government’s forceful theft of private property. We plan to hand out literature and make our presence known in front of the main post office on Murrow Blvd. in Greensboro starting around 5:00 PM. Forced taxation and under-representation are the hallmark of modern American Tyranny. As citizens, we have no control over the destination of our taxes. We are forced to pay for an illegal war in Iraq, a futile and unjust war against drugs, a wasteful and inefficient border control program, just to name a few of the countless money pits led by the federal government. They fund their agendas with money taken from us under threat of imprisonment. On Monday we will make our voices heard. Join us!

Here's an update on the most recent activity among the Guilford county Libertarians...

The Esteemed Paul Elledge wrote a great letter to the editor about the travesties of North Carolina Ballot Access. It was published in the Greensboro News and Record on April 13th . It sparked a lot of good commentary and got us some more signatures. Way to go Paul!

This past Friday (4/14) a group of Libs all got together to see "Why We Fight," a new documentary about the American Industrial-Military Complex. The film was extremely well done. So many anti-war films come across as being extremely partisan. Thankfully this one didn't. The focus was on the current administration and their activities over the last two decades, but the "liberal" government did not escape criticism by any means. This film is a must see for anyone who questions the nature and motivations of the American federal government.
